The superstar’s celebrity friends turned out in droves for her final runway show.

As far as runways go, it’s pretty hard to top having Grace Jones as your closer. But actress-turned-singer-turned-designer Zendaya is hardly one to shy away from ambition, so on Sunday evening, at New York City’s famous Apollo Theater, she tried to one-up the barn-burning fashion show she staged with Tommy Hilfiger in Paris just last season.

From the starting line, it promised to be an epic night. Fans, press and famouses alike lined the back lot of Harlem’s iconic landmark, all waiting to see what Tommy x Zendaya had planned for them. The result? Vintage cars (one of which started up and drove right through the audience to park center stage), a virtuoso saxophone player and a full choir, all parked against the backdrop of a ’70s street corner. In other words, it was the perfect setting for the cast of models to strut into.

And strut they did, wearing Zendaya’s designs for Tommy Hilfiger, from bell-bottomed suiting to midi-length skirts paired with knee-high boots. It was a callback to another time; as the soundtrack and the platform heels clarified, it was circa the ’70s, but everything felt so fresh. Pleated wool skirts were paired with sheer black button-downs, both covered in polka dots; silver lamé lived right alongside on-trend snakeskin; furry, leopard-print coats layered above black leather dresses looked both covered-up and extremely sexy.

Even more important that the clothes, however, was the vibe given off by the models, a cast of mostly non-white people who danced, sang and swaggered through the set with the kind of confidence and self-assurance rarely seen on a fashion runway. But don’t take it from us: Judging by the reactions from Zendaya’s “Euphoria” co-stars, all sitting front row and center, and whooping, snapping and clapping (and yelling, “YES, BITCH” — we see you, Barbie Ferreira, and we love you), this collection has legs.
