Ever wonder what a fitness guru orders at happy hour? Hint: It’s not just water with lime. How about her fave way to break a sweat outside? Well, wonder no more. We chatted up two of social media’s biggest wellness pros, the Tone It Up girls. Here, Karena and Katrina spill their secrets for living your best life (without purging the kitchen of chocolate).
Rue Now: Your brand is all about balance. How do you run a successful business and have time to stay on top of healthy habits?
Karena: What’s great about our jobs is that we get to practice what we preach while working. The recipes we create (and eat!) at the TIU HQ are all healthy and good for your body. We also take breaks during the middle of the day with our team, where we’ll do a squat challenge, go for a walk on the beach path, or test out one of our newest workouts together.

RN: We love your Wine Not Wednesday series. What’s your go-to cocktail for saving calories without sacrificing happy hour?
Katrina: I love red wine, but in the summer, I also like to make our Spicy Margarita recipe. We use grapefruit to switch up the flavor and to add in some fat-burning benefits.
Karena: I’m also a wine lover, but when I’m looking for a low-calorie cocktail, I like to keep it simple and fresh with vodka or gin and soda and a splash of lime juice.

RN: List your top three outdoor summer workouts. Ready, set, go!
Karena: In the summer, I love getting outdoors for a long beach run or bike ride.
Katrina: We are currently obsessed with our HIIT Run workout, Cardio Abs from Beach Babe 4, and Tush It Good. All are great for raising your heart rate and metabolism.
RN: Rocking a bathing suit can be daunting, no matter how often you break a sweat. What are your tips for feeling confident in your own skin?
Karena: Great posture is the best confidence booster! Plus, when you stand up straight, you show off your sexy shoulders, back, and stomach. Wear what you feel comfortable and confident in. I’m currently in love with sexy one-piece swimsuits.

RN: What ingredients should always be in a healthy kitchen? (Fingers crossed that chocolate counts… )
Katrina: We love chocolate! We always keep dark chocolate in our kitchens and break off a few pieces to satisfy our sweet tooth. But it’s great to always have some healthy grains like quinoa or brown rice, green veggies, onions, garlic, and lean protein. If you have these in your kitchen, you always can make a healthy breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We actually provide a weekly grocery list for our 8 Week Bikini Program. It really makes eating healthy simple.
RN: Let’s talk athleisure. Do you like the trend? What are your favorite pieces to wear?
Karena: We probably own more athletic clothes than regular. We even created a line of super comfy workout apparel with Bandier. My favorite is the High Tide Reversible Crop.
Katrina: And my fave is the Weekender Hoodie! It’s perfect for switching from working out at the gym to shopping with your best friends.

RN: Tell us a bit about your style when you’re not working (or rather, working out).
Karena: My style is very laid-back. I like dark colors, and I sometimes add a pop of color. You can find me in jeans, a T-shirt, and sneakers.
Katrina: Very beachy. I’m so inspired by the lifestyle that comes with living by the beach. On a perfect summer day, you can find me in a bathing suit with a crochet dress and a pair of fun sunglasses.

RN: We all have days when heading to the gym seems impossible. What keeps you motivated on those days?
Katrina: Our community! Whenever either of us isn’t in the mood to work out, we scroll through the #TIUteam hashtag on Instagram – seeing all of our girls kicking booty gets us excited and inspired again.
