Sure, a bit of scruff may be the look du jour, but a smooth shave will never go out of style. While there are pitfalls to picking up the razor daily (think ingrown hairs and irritation), a well-equipped grooming arsenal will keep the nicks at bay and leave heads turning. Here we outline which essentials belong in your medicine cabinet and, of course, how to properly use them.
The Goods
Exfoliating scrub
Pre-shave oil (optional, but recommended for sensitive skin)
Shaving cream and a badger brush
Fresh razor
Aftershave moisturizer in your preferred formula
The Routine
Step 1: Steam your skin – and not only does a shower count, it’s encouraged – to open pores and soften hair. While you’re at it, buff with a facial scrub for a deep, exfoliating clean.
Step 2 (optional): Massage a couple drops of pre-shave oil on your face and neck to lubricate the skin. Pro tip: Apply with your non-razor-wielding hand to avoid a slippery grip.
Step 3: Use the badger brush to lather, which conveniently also lifts the hair from its root. Wet the bristles with warm water, apply a dime-sized amount of cream, and massage in a circular motion.
Step 4: While shaving, let the razor’s weight do the work. Shave with the grain in small strokes on your first pass, switching to against the grain on your second run. Don’t forget to re-lather in between.
Step 5: Once you’ve eliminated all traces of stubble, apply a cool, clean towel to close pores. Then pat on an aftershave moisturizer to combat dry skin. This safeguards against blemishes, as itching carries bacteria from your hands. Now, say hello to a freshly shaven face.
