What’s the Right Age to Start Getting Botox?

SHEfinds | Katelyn Holland

I have a friend who, at the ripe age of 27, started to get Botox injections. She claims it’s preventative and will be worth the investment in the future. Her proactive measures to fight her future wrinkles made me panic. Should I start getting Botox, too? What’s the right age to start getting Botox? Is it ever too early to start? The very thought of shelling out money for injections at age 26 was giving me stress lines. In order to calm my nerves, I reached out to Valerie Goldburt, MD, PhD. Dr. Goldburt is board certified and specializes in dermatology at Advanced Dermatology P.C.

Dr. Goldburt assured me that’s there no “right age” for getting Botox. She explained that women should start to consider Botox “when the wrinkles on their forehead, between the eyebrows, and around their eyes or mouth start to bother them.”

If you are looking for a sign as to when you “need” Botox, Dr. Goldburt says: if you “have lines that don’t go away when you relax your face.” But ultimately, it’s your choice. Dr. Goldburt said she doesn’t think it’s necessary to get Botox as a preventative measure. This is because Botox will work reliably the moment you do decide to get it. However, keep in mind that those who wait longer to get Botox will have deeper creases, and it takes more successive treatments to iron out the wrinkles with Botox.

Unfortunately, there are no alternatives to Botox. According to Dr. Goldburt, it is the single best way to remove specific types of lines on the face. However, if you are worried about wrinkle prevention, Dr. Goldburt suggests sleeping on your back, using a good moisturizer at night, and always using a moisturizer with SPF during the day. Another tip is to stay hydrated. These small changes will help you keep your face from aging prematurely so you won’t have to get Botox in your 20s.
