Time for real talk: As much as we await alfresco season with bated breath, sometimes it’s just too (fill in the irritable blank) to actually breathe. Thanks to this expert advice from our styling director, Alexandra, living your best outdoor life is no sweat. Find your most pressing question below and head out in confidence.
Q: Bugs eat me alive. What can I wear to stay cool but covered?
A: I always go for a lightweight maxi dress or long skirt. If you’re more of a pants girl, skip your heat-trapping jeans and try joggers. And it never hurts to tote a neutral, goes-with-everything scarf for covering your arms at night.
Q: What fabrics will help me avoid dreaded sweaty patches?
A: Let’s start with the don’ts: Stay far away from silk, rayon, polyester, and nylon. Opt for linen blends and cotton to stay dry. And remember, darker colors make sweat less visible.
Q: My closet is suddenly full of off-the-shoulder tops. How on earth do I get them to stay put? And if I’m cold at night, what should I wear on top?
A: Make sure you’re buying the right size. If you have a medium-large bust, make sure the top is snug. Your bust will help the top stay up. Another trick I use in the studio: Take two rubber bands or hair elastics, pin them to the inside of the shirt arm, and slide them under your armpit when you wear the shirt. Guaranteed to stay put! And for layering, I love the look (and warmth) of an oversized denim jacket worn over the shoulders.
Q: What is a sandal hater supposed to wear all summer?
A: Closed-toe mules in neutral colors, like soft pink or nude. Runners-up: Sneaker-style espadrilles or raffia sneakers.
Q: My walk to work is long with barely any shade. What should I reach for on weekday mornings?
A: Definitely a sleeveless dress in a lightweight fabric – specifically linen blends and cotton.
Q: What shoes are best for an outdoor (a.k.a. grassy) event that has a formal dress code?
A: A two-strap sandal with a block heel. You won’t have to worry about sinking into the lawn.
Q: Finally, what’s a foolproof outfit for a beach-casual wedding?
A: Choose a long, flowy dress and flat sandals or a low block heel. You really can’t go wrong with that combo, especially if you wear some statement jewelry with it.
