Last night the 2020 awards season kicked off, and this year’s red carpet sparked a fashion debate. Celebrities either nodded to Hollywood’s golden era with classic gowns, or they opted to make a different kind of A-list statement in over-the-top volume and color.
This divide in front of the step-and-repeat left many wondering – for any black-tie affair, is it better to dress like a minimalist or a maximalist? A timeless choice is a likely contender for topping best-dressed lists, while a riskier avant-garde pick satisfies an appreciation for fashion and what’s now. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite looks of the night. Read on for major style inspo and to see how you can achieve a red carpet ready look in no time.

For Minimalist Dressing
All sleek and chic in eveningwear neutrals, these women stunned in fit-and-flare shapes with little to no embellishment. Jewelry, hair, and makeup were all equally as simple. Jennifer Aniston, in a Dior gown with a ruffled bodice and belt, had her signature flowing waves plus a double-stranded diamond necklace to complete her look. The way to achieve a minimal look? An all-black ensemble. Let the statement come through eye-catching jewelry and glammed-up makeup. The dress will speak for itself.

For Maximalist Dressing
Fashion risks don’t always pay off, but these three actors all won the night with their individuality. Zoey Deutch, dressed in a FENDI deep-v, puff-sleeve, mustard-yellow jumpsuit, radiated cool-girl beauty with slicked-back hair and colorful gemstone jewels. Bright colors, voluminous sleeves, and embellished necklines (sometimes combined) are all trends of the season that were flawlessly translated on the red carpet. A total maximalist doesn’t shy away from anything – especially color. Be bold in the most powerful of colors, like a rich yellow. Over-the-top sleeves add for some extra drama.
