When it comes to makeup, we’re taught that it’s always best to be symmetrical. Your eyebrows should match, your blush should, too, and don’t even get us started on cat-eye liner. Symmetry is key — or is it?

Instead of copying the same look on both eyes, makeup artists and influencers have recently decided to stick it to the beauty rules — opting for mismatched eyeshadow and liner in a bevy of bold, contrasting shades. Fuchsia and purple? Why not? Pink and green? Who’s stopping you?

Call it a non-committal way to pull off two of your favorite hues or a statement against the rigidity of makeup techniques. Either way, there’s no denying these looks will turn heads and give you plenty of ideas for spring. Ahead, check out six of our favorite two-toned eye looks.

Taking a cue from the actress’ multicolored outfit, makeup artist Nick Barose had some serious fun on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Tati Gabrielle, layering on hot pink eyeshadow on one eye and lime green on the other.

Artist Teisha Williams attributes her affinity for mismatched eye makeup to her astrological sign. “I’m a Gemini! It’s within me. I love change and I love to switch shit up,” she says. To get bold color payoff, Williams applied a base of white cream shadow to her lids before topping it off with multiple layers of purple and hot pink shadow. Then, for a little extra shine, she tapped on a layer of Milk Makeup’s Face Gloss.

While many of the mismatched looks on Instagram feature just two shadows, this one has a mix of blues, greens, pinks, and oranges — topped off with a hit of iridescent shimmer on the inner corner.
