The Luxe Care Guide: How to Tackle the Winter-to-Spring Wardrobe Swap

The thing we’re most looking forward to this season? Spring cleaning, all the way. But we don’t mean the actual scrub-your-floors kind. We’re talking the art of the closet transition. When it comes to those special investment pieces, you can’t exactly just stuff them into boxes and call it a day. So we’re showing you how to properly store everything from OTK boots to puffer coats – and how to prep your wardrobe for warmer days. Take notes.

Shoes

Bye, Winter
Snow. Slush. Sleet. Our boots and shoes take a beating, so prepping them for storage is important. Give each pair a good scrubdown to remove salt stains and dirt from a season of wear. Then apply a leather conditioner where needed, and stuff boots with shoe trees, newspaper, or pool noodles to retain their shape.

Hello, Spring
Sun, is that you? Book a pedicure, because it’s almost open-toe season. Ready your sandals and strappy shoes for fresh air by applying a water protectant like Scotchgard. It will keep April showers in check – and your Jimmy Choos in tip-top shape.

Cashmere, Linen, and Silk

Bye, Winter
Not all cashmere needs to be packed away for summer (we’re looking at you, lightweight sweaters). But when it comes to heavy-duty knits, things like oils, perfumes, body lotions, and sweat can cause yellowing and stains. So give everything a good dry-clean before tucking it into the back of the closet. After cleaning, wrap each sweater in acid-free tissue paper, then place them all in 100% cotton canvas bags. Pro tip: Add lavender sachets to ward off moths, and you’re good to go.

Hello, Spring
Warmer temps = lighter fabrics. It’s – almost – time to revel in breezy materials like linen and silk. Wash linen in warm (not hot) water to prevent shrinking, and ship silk pieces off to the dry cleaner to eliminate any musty storage odors. Finish with a garment steamer to gently release any wrinkles.

Outerwear

Bye, Winter
Puffers, parkas, and faux-fur toppers: We love you, but we can’t wait to say goodbye. As with clothing, coats should be washed prior to being stored for spring and summer. Remember to empty pockets and fasten all snaps, buttons, or zippers, then gently fold each piece. Loosely stack your outerwear in boxes, rather than hanging. This will help it retain shape much better.

Hello, Spring
In a few short weeks, we’re reuniting with our leathers, quilts, and trenches (and it feels so good). When it comes to moto jackets or anything calfskin, apply a weather repellant like you would shoes or handbags. Re-fluff pancaked quilts by tumble-drying on low with two tennis balls for a few minutes. And run that trusty steamer over your trench to remove any creases.
