The Guy’s Guide to Shirt-and-Tie Pairings

One thing’s for sure. When it comes to shirt-and-tie combos, there is a right way and a wrong way to go about it. And even more so when it comes to pairing patterns with patterns. So stick to these simple rules to achieve a dapper win every time you don this classic duo:

White: When it comes to white button-downs, you’re working with a blank canvas. So go nuts – be it a seriously bold stripe, critter-covered number, or a multicolor printed creation.

Stripes: Pull out the main color of the shirt with the small details on the tie. It’s all about subtle matching.

Checked Plaid: A more subdued version of classic plaid, this variety meshes well with contrasting prints and colors (just be sure you have a hint of the base color).

Gingham: Play with texture (like in this shiny-meets-matte tie) to break up the repetitive nature of this print. Thick stripes are also a fun alternative.

Classic Plaid: When the shirt pattern is already busy, keep the neckwear dark and avoid bright colors that compete too much.

Our Ted Baker: Men’s Ties Boutique opens Saturday, July 6, at 11AM ET.
