Fitness Friday: Giving Aqua Cycling a Spin

Cooling off and breaking a sweat all at once. Impossible, right? Wrong. Introducing aqua cycling, the latest fitness fad to make a splash in the states.


Brought to us from overseas, aqua cycling consists of a 45-minute workout on a stationary bike submerged in water (a.k.a. a Hydrorider). Unlike typical spin bikes, there are no resistance knobs but rather rudders that turn as you pedal.

The pros:

  • This workout is stress-free on your joints, which is great for people with knee or other sports-related injuries.
  • The water massages your muscles as you spin, so you can say goodbye to post-workout soreness – just ask the girls from SELF.
  • Most aqua classes claim you can burn up to 800 calories per session. So that double cheeseburger you’ve been craving? Order it.
  • Water friction can help reduce cellulite by stimulating your lymphatic system.

The cons:

  • It is a little pricey, depending on where you attend. Expect to pay about $40 per class.
  • You can’t be late. (As if showing up tardy to fitness classes without water involved isn’t awkward enough.)
