The idea of chic bohemian dressing originated after the French Revolution. When the ruling class fell, so did their patronage of the arts. A creative counterculture formed that embraced a romantic movement dedicated to imagination. As seen in Puccini’s La Bohème (what millennials might know as Rent), free-flowing hair and self-expression was considered avant-garde.
The chicest city in the world, Paris, still touts its history of housing intellectuals and artists, which is perhaps why scarf dressing is a hallmark of French-girl style – from a twist around the neck to a print on a dress. Today, designers bring elements of the scarf into their spring collections with global appeal.
