For its recent September 2017 runway collection, Burberry leaned hard into the things it’s best known for, like its signature plaid and a whole range of trench coats. And lest there be any question about whether that was a good move – i.e. one that could feel cool, current, and fashion-y in the year of our Lord 2017 – Rihanna took it upon herself to provide proof of its aesthetic merit by wearing a Burberry-heavy look in New York on Tuesday night.
Clad in a high-necked LBD that showed off just a bit of sideboob, Riri piled on the brand’s favorite motifs, from her “vintage check” baseball cap to her single-breasted plastic trench in the same print. Even the Burberry argyle socks and clear plastic heels, which could’ve felt cheesy on someone else, somehow worked perfectly on Rih.
Does the fact that she’s wearing almost exclusively one brand make us suspect that she was probably either paid to wear or gifted this stuff? Yep. (Although, the collection is already available for purchase, and big spenders like street-style queen Giovanna Battaglia Englebert did, in fact, “see now, buy now” after the show in September.) But does it make the look any less cool or any less likely to drive onlookers to either purchase their own heritage check pieces or pull their vintage ones out of storage? Nope. It’s not capitalism’s fault that Rihanna can do no sartorial wrong.
