Battle the Chill: The Gentleman’s Jacket

There’s a time, a place, and a purpose for every piece of outerwear. For example, that fleece jacket from college is really warm and comfortable, but is it suitable for date night? I think not. Here are some go-to staples to keep you warm and appropriately dressed this fall and winter.

The Barn Jacket:

Lightweight and perfect for layering, this piece is most suitable for the autumn months. The silhouette was designed specifically for outdoor activities, as its name implies, so whether you’re chopping firewood or grabbing a coffee in town, you’re staying warm and casually cool. Modernize the look by pairing it with a colorful sweater and your favorite pair of dark denim.

The Overcoat:

Sadly, the overcoat is commonly overlooked in the contemporary gentleman’s closet. But if you wear a suit to work, take someone special out to a fancy dinner, or are called upon to wear a tuxedo for a special occasion, the overcoat is a sound investment for your outerwear arsenal. With a longer length and sophisticated fit, it’s the appropriate coat to layer over your most formal suits. Stick to wool, cashmere, or a blend of the two in charcoal, navy, or black. You’ll feel like a million bucks.

The Peacoat:

A classic wardrobe staple, the peacoat was originally worn by sailors in the American and European navies. Modern renditions of the coat still maintain its signature double-breasted front, wide lapels, vertical slash pockets, and its practical versatility. With the right techniques, it can be your go-to outerwear piece for all occasions, from fall through early spring. Since you’ll likely be throwing it over your shoulders on a near-daily basis, look for one with high-quality construction that’s made of 100% wool. Be prepared to get a few “Ahoy sailor” nods of approval from passers-by.
