Designer Talk: Proenza Schouler Dishes on the PS1 & More

Right now, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez – or more commonly known to the style set as Proenza Schouler – are on top of the fashion world. Last night, the design duo, famed for creating the PS1 satchel (a.k.a. the It bag), visited the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston to chat womenswear with Curator Helen Molesworth.

Met with a packed house, the pair spoke with the same polish expressed in their celebrity-adored, minimalist silhouettes. During the Q&A, the two dished about their backgrounds (did you know Lazaro was once premed?) and their intention to actually create the “anti It bag” (sorry, boys).  But the best part of the night? Hernandez’s humbling story about how he scored an internship at Michael Kors. You see, he spotted Anna Wintour on a plane and did the unthinkable: approached her. After a slight tap on the shoulder was ignored, he fearlessly slipped a note under her glass. A few weeks later, he received a phone call from Michael Kors saying that, “Wintour thought, ‘the kid must have some serious balls,'” and that he should hire him.

The takeaway from the night? Don’t just chase after your dreams, tap them right on the shoulder – bonus points if it’s done with a PS1 on your arm.
