Around Boston With Erin Gates

The ever-stylish Erin Gates, interior designer, stylist, and Elements Of Style blogger, partnered with Rue Boston to curate three Local Picks from some of her favorite spots in the city – Diane von Furstenberg, Lekker, and OM Warrior. We chatted with Erin to give us the scoop on fall style – and her choice Boston indulgences.

Rue La La: First things first. How did you get into interior design? How did you know that it was for you?
Erin: I am the daughter of a very talented architectural designer and so I grew up playing with fabric samples and drawing at a drafting table. My family also owned a women’s clothing store for three generations, so fashion is in my blood, too. I had such a blessed childhood getting to experience both these wonderful industries! I think I always knew I’d go into design one way or another – and now I luckily get to do both fashion and interior design.

Rue La La: We’re dying to know – what’s the one style tip you tell all your clients?
Erin: I am getting back into traditional and preppy looks for fall in the home and on the body, but mixed with a small dose of modern. I’m loving classic cable sweaters and peacoats, but worn with skinny leather pants and boots. For the home, I love a classically styled Chesterfield sofa paired with a worn antique Persian rug and then a Lucite coffee table to mix it up. Rich velvets and lush textures are also way up there on my favorites list.

Rue La La: You must pull inspiration from so many areas, and there are lots of home magazines out there. What are your favorites for great home décor and style?
Erin: House Beautiful, Traditional Home, ELLE Décor, Coastal Living, Veranda.

Rue La La: For those of us who need to work with our existing wardrobe, what are three easy ways to transform our closets (and looks) from season to season?
Erin: Accessories! Add a leopard belt or shoes to anything to spice it up. Layer and pair things that you may not think go together (example: wool shorts over tights paired with booties and a chunky sweater).

Rue La La: We bet you have an envy-inducing amount of accessories! Now on to the big stuff – what’s the one fall trend you absolutely cannot wait to wear?
Erin: Capes! I’m dying for a beautiful camel-colored cape with leather trim to pair with skinny denim and equestrian riding boots.

Rue La La: You’ve had an exciting career so far. What’s been your biggest moment?
Erin: I’d say waking up on a Sunday morning a couple years ago and seeing my face (and home) on the cover of the Sunday Boston Globe Magazine. My parents love the Sunday paper and to see them so proud was really great.

Rue La La: Where’s your favorite spot in the city for when you want a little dose of indulgence?
Erin: For the best cocktail: the Lime Basil Gimlet at Via Matta
For a great meal: Hamersley’s Bistro or Mistral
For a spa day: Bliss Spa at The W
For smiles: Watching all the puppies at Peter’s Park in the South End

Rue La La: Besides Boston (obviously), what’s your favorite city?
Erin: PARIS! Although I’m about to go to London this week so that might become challenged!
