Every week, Diane Mizota – style guru and our newest girl crush – will walk you through the latest trends and how to pull them off (ruffles, anyone?). Rue Now: Describe your personal style in three words.
Diane Mizota: Tomboy plays dress-up. (I hyphenated, so that’s still technically three words… )
RN: Which fashion trend are you eager to try?
DM: Ruffles, ruffles, ruffles! This is such a fun trend this season, and there are so many different ways to wear it. I just picked up a gorgeous navy blouse with ruffled cap sleeves on my trip to Japan this summer and love the crisp, architectural shape of it. I’ll also try the one-shoulder trend, because it’s flattering on women with broader shoulders and not a lot of curves to work with (like me).
RN: Which celebrity’s wardrobe would you want to raid?
DM: A hybrid of Kerry Washington’s work closet, Cate Blanchett’s red carpet style, and, of course, SJP’s shoes.
RN: Which closet staple can you not live without?
DM: My khaki-green, tie-waist poplin midi skirt has been a go-to all year. For fall, I’ll pair it with boots and a sweater. Every time I wear it, I feel chic and comfortable, whether in heels, booties, adidas, or sandals. It truly goes with everything.
RN: What’s your on-screen beauty mantra?
DM: Look like yourself, only better. I stay away from heavy contouring and try to keep it as natural as possible – but given TV lights, that’s not always easy! Generally, I keep the focus on eyes or lips, not both. I love a smoky eye, individual false eyelashes, and a peachy-pink nude lip. When the outfit calls for it, I’ll do a neutral eye, still loading up the lashes, and then add a strong lip. I’m loving a saturated matte coral or deep red, like NARS Cruella.
RN: Name your favorite red carpet look of the year.
DM: Margot Robbie at the Oscars in that plunging gold Tom Ford dress – and her messy hair was perfection!
