When it comes to styling powerful women, Colleen Atwood is an expert. We chatted with Atwood about how she dressed the strong female characters in Lionsgate’s highly anticipated production, Bombshell.
Rue La La: With a résumé including Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Dumbo, Snow White and the Huntsman, and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Bombshell seems like a big shift. What drew you away from fantasy and toward this drama?
Colleen Atwood: The script was compelling, and when I met with the team I really liked the approach and energy of the project – not to mention the stunning cast.
RLL: What was your process for crafting Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson’s costumes?
CA: I looked at real footage of both women – some of which I watched for depictions of real moments in the film. For the others, I took an approach to them based on reality. In Charlize [Theron]’s case, I used cleaner, more minimal color and detail. With Nicole [Kidman], more bright, typical jewel tones.

RLL: For fictional roles, how do you go about dressing a powerful female character?
CA: I think that there are all kinds of ways to dress as a powerful character. Once I’ve met the actor and know what the costume needs to do for them, I get inspiration and begin my work. The most obvious power look is more structured architectural lines with natural, perfect hair and makeup.
RLL: Is there a specific piece or certain style that you’re always drawn to when designing for a power woman?
CA: There really is no one thing – it is driven by character. It really matters what the concept of power is. Sometimes the less obvious, more feminine, and soft design can belie hidden power. You don’t have to say “power” right out of the gate.

RLL: How do you think clothing empowers women?
CA: I think clothing can be empowering in many ways. From the wow factor of an event dress or suit to the simple beauty of a well-cut jacket and skirt or trousers – feeling confident and unselfconscious is a form of power.
RLL: Do you have any predictions as to what the leading ladies will wear to the premiere?
CA: Honestly – no, but what a group! I am sure they will not disappoint.
Catch these power women in theaters today, December 13, 2019.
