10 Things You’re Doing That Will Eventually Make You Break Out

SHEfinds | Katelyn Holland

We’re all guilty of passing out with our makeup on every once in a while. We know it’s bad for our skin, but sometimes it just happens. Doing this one time isn’t going to ruin your skin, but over time, it can cause serious breakouts. Even if you wash and moisturize your face regularly, you can still be damaging your skin without realizing it. So what other seemingly harmless habits have the potential to cause you to break out? Check out the list below.

Trying too many products. Sorry ladies, but sampling too many different products can actually irritate your skin. Switching up your skincare too often prevents the products from being effective.

Blasting the AC. Air conditioning can wreak havoc on your skin. The constant cold air can dry out your skin, making it red and flaky. Be sure that your air conditioning isn’t blowing on your face while you sleep.

Your hair products. There is a chance that your hair products are bad for your skin. According to Cosmopolitan, sulfates, moisturizing agents, and silicones in your shampoo, conditioner, and stylers can seep into your pores, clogging them and resulting in chest acne, bacne, or pimples along your hairline. Avoid this by washing your face last when you’re in the shower. This will help remove any hair products that might have gotten left behind on your skin.

Not cleaning your makeup brushes. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: You need to wash your makeup brushes on a regular basis. Dirty makeup brushes spread dirt and bacteria from your face to your makeup, then back to your face. Makeup grime that builds up on your brushes can also irritate your skin, causing breakouts.

Talking on the phone. Bacteria accumulates on your phone and is directly transferred to your skin when you talk on the phone. To prevent this, make sure you are cleaning your cell phone on a regular basis. Find out how to clean it here.

Testing products in stores. Beware of tester products! Putting on product from open tubes and jars at the beauty counter can result in breakouts. These types of products are usually contaminated because customers stick their fingers in the product or apply it directly to their skin. If you are getting a beauty counter makeover, make sure the sales associate sanitizes the products and brushes.

Falling asleep with your makeup on. If you’re guilty of doing this on a regular basis, try keeping a pack of facial cleansing wipes on your nightstand. This way, you can quickly wipe off your makeup before going to bed.

Scrubbing too hard. If you already have acne, exfoliating your skin can result in irritation. Scrubbing the active acne results in bacteria being spread across your face. Try to exfoliate sparingly, and use a gentle facial scrub.

Picking at your skin. By touching your pimples, you risk spreading your acne to other parts of your face. Picking at pimples can lead to irritation and scarring.

Eating too much sugar. Your sweet tooth might be causing your breakouts. Sugar can aggravate hormonal acne. Over time, it can also lead to inflammation and cause sagging skin and wrinkles.
