France’s film festival opens this week, which means we’re looking forward to 11 days of red carpet style. 1954: Simone Silva Goes Topless

A year after Brigitte Bardot nearly bared all, actress Simone Silva did just that while being encouraged by photographers. Ever since, Cannes has been known for its scantily clad appearances.

1957: Diamond Tiaras Become a Trend

If there’s one style element both celebs and stylists are known for at this event, it’s the jewels. Elizabeth Taylor can be credited with starting the trend after she sported a diamond tiara gifted by her third husband, who said, “You’re my queen, and I think you should have a tiara.”

1971: The Great Wedding Dress Repeat

Mia Farrow married Andre Previn in 1970 wearing an embroidered olive-green V-neck gown with puffed sleeves. The public got a second view of the dress after she wore it for Cannes’ Opening Ceremony.

1987: The People’s Princess Is Red Carpet Royalty

Princess Diana showed up on the Cannes red carpet in a pale blue chiffon gown with matching scarf. This number is remembered as one of her most iconic looks.

1991: Madonna Sports a Cone Bra

Though Madonna first debuted her infamous cone bra on her 1990 Blonde Ambition Tour, she made headlines for going against formality and wearing one to her docu-film premiere, In Bed with Madonna.

2010: Cate Blanchett Honors McQueen

Cate Blanchett takes home best dressed (and best actress) on the reg, but in 2010, she honored the recently passed British designer Alexander McQueen in his dramatic eagle-motif gown. Not many could have pulled off this ambitious look, but Ms. Blanchett did McQueen proud.
