16 Mother’s Day Activities That She’ll Actually Enjoy

Every year, you take your mom out for a prix-fixe brunch. And sure, that’s nice and all but…it’s a little predictable, no? This year, surprise your favorite lady with one of these fun—and unexpected—Mother’s Day activities instead. Because she totally deserves it. (Psst…or send this list to your partner and kids and have them treat you.

1. Indulge in some retail therapy. Every mom has “a thing.” Whether it’s antiquing, farmers markets or you know, Costco, treat your mom to an afternoon of hitting up her favorite stores and buying her something nice. (Just think of it as karma for all those times she drove you to the mall.)

2. Go see a movie. Let her pick the film and the snacks.

3. Get a mani-pedi. Or go all out and book your mom a massage. Because there’s nothing like a little pampering to encourage mother-daughter bonding.

4. Or have a spa day at home. Here are some DIY face masks to get you started.

5. Check out an art gallery or a museum. Look at you two, being all cultural.

6. Get crafty. Jewelry, tote bags, candles…there’s a DIY project that has your mom’s name all over it. (And the finished product will be so much better than that macaroni necklace you made her in the first grade.)

7. Go strawberry picking. These juicy gems are in season and chances are there’s a farm or orchard nearby where you can get your fill. Then, enjoy your bounty at home with one of these tasty strawberry recipes.

8. Go to a Sip and Paint class. There are plenty of art studios across the country that offer wine and painting events. Just don’t expect your mom to hang your work of art on the fridge, OK?

9. Hit up a local winery. Head to a vineyard near you (or your favorite wine bar) to catch up over a glass of Merlot.

10. Go to a workout class. The mother-daughter duo that sweats together, um, goes and gets post-workout smoothies together? Stretch it out with a yoga class or get your heart rate up with something more intense like a spin class.

11. Garden together. Go to your local garden center and spend the day potting, planting and pruning. Don’t have a garden? Go shopping for some pretty indoor plants instead.

12. Host a picnic. Pack an alfresco feast (think: cheese, fruit and sandwiches) and pick out a prime spot in your local park for a relaxing and delicious afternoon.

13. Go catch a game. It’s baseball season, guys. Check out what Major League games are on here (or root for the home team in the Minors).

14. Enjoy the Great Outdoors. It’s the perfect season for hiking, cycling or kayaking.

15. Take a cooking class. She may have taught you everything you know in the kitchen but that doesn’t mean she won’t be excited to learn something new.

16. Book a family photo shoot. Your mom is always trying to get everyone together for a family snap. Do the work for her this year and hire a professional photographer to take this year’s holiday card.
